There’s something about hopping on a train that makes a local day trip feel like a big adventure—especially when it’s your kids’ first-ever train ride! Our recent visit to San Juan Capistrano was filled with great food, animal encounters, gelato, and the kind of memories I’ll be replaying in my mind for weeks.
We boarded the train from Anaheim to San Juan Capistrano, backpacks in tow (thank you, Marcos, for handling waters and entertainment), and set out on a little family escape. The kids were wide-eyed the entire ride—peeking out the windows, asking questions, and soaking in every moment. Their excitement made the quick ride feel like a full-on vacation.

First Stop in San Juan Capistrano: Food at Rodeo 39
As soon as we stepped off the train, our mission was clear: find food. We made our way to Rodeo 39 Public Market, a vibrant food hall with tons of options to choose from. After much wandering and debate, Marcos and I locked eyes and went all in on the hot chicken. Was it spicy? Yes. Did we sweat through every bite? Also yes. Worth it? Every single one.
The kids kept it classic with some less-spicy (read: safer) options, and we all took a much-needed break inside the cool, buzzing market before heading out to explore more of San Juan Capistrano.

Petting Zoo Joy and Animal Encounters
Next up was the petting zoo, and honestly, it was one of the highlights of the day. Lia was in absolute heaven—brushing goats, feeding alpacas, and falling in love with every single animal she met. The twins were equally amazed, giggling at chickens and sheep and cautiously handing out treats. Watching them connect with the animals in such a hands-on way was the kind of joy that makes these family outings worth every bit of planning.

Strolling Through Los Rios Street
After the zoo, we took a walk down the historic Los Rios Street, one of the oldest neighborhoods in California and a must-see while in San Juan Capistrano. The tree-lined street is filled with charming shops, old adobe homes, and cozy cafes. It was the perfect place to wander with the kids, take a few family photos, and enjoy a bit of California history—plus, it gave us a bit of shade from that mid-day heat.
Sweet Treats and Local Gems
With the heat rising, we knew exactly what we needed—gelato. We found a cute gelato shop nearby, and the mango and stracciatella were just what we needed to recharge. But the real treat? A stop at FUKN Bread, a local bakery that lives up to the hype. It was warm, fresh, and just the right thing to bring home after a day full of adventure.

Wrapping Up Our San Juan Capistrano Adventure
Yes, it was hot. Really hot. We picked one of the hottest days this month to go! But even with the sun beating down, this little getaway to San Juan Capistrano was exactly what I needed. The train ride, the food, the petting zoo, and the sweet moments in between gave us a break from routine and reminded me just how much fun adventuring as a family can be.
Whether you’re looking for a low-key day trip or planning your kids’ first train ride, I can’t recommend San Juan Capistrano enough. It’s packed with charm, family-friendly stops, and easy ways to create unforgettable memories. Just don’t forget the water, maybe a handheld fan—and definitely don’t skip the hot chicken.
Until our next adventure!
