When your twins are obsessed with Super Mario Bros and turning five, there’s only one way to celebrate: go all out with a Super Mario Bros-themed party! From DIY decorations to Mario-inspired treats, this party was a blast from start to finish. Let me take you through how we turned the party into a real-life Mushroom Kingdom with creative Super Mario Bros party decorations that had the kids (and adults) feeling like they’d jumped right into the game!

DIY Super Mario Bros Party Decorations

1. Bob-omb & Chain Chomp Patio Décor – Super Mario Bros Party Decorations with a Bang!

Let’s start with the Bob-omb and Chain Chomps I hung from the patio. These explosive (pun intended) decorations were super fun to make. I crafted them from black paper lanterns, cutting their eyes, feet, and hats from cardstock. For the Chain Chomps, I made chains from black cardstock to make them look like they were ready to chomp down on the guests! Hanging these from the patio brought an adventurous touch to the party space.

2. Piranha Plant & Fire Flower Centerpieces – Creative Super Mario Bros Party Decorations for Your Table

The centerpieces were a hit, and they doubled as fun cake area props! The Piranha Plants were made using red paper plates, white dots, white teeth I cut out of cardstock, and for the stems I covered wooden dowels with green streamer. You can place them in little flower pots with some moss or green crepe paper. The Fire Flowers can be created similarly, using red, yellow, and white cardstock cut in ovals layered, and they add a fiery touch to the tables.

3. Boo & King Boo Décor – Hauntingly Fun Super Mario Bros Party Decorations

Boo and King Boo were another patio highlight. These mischievous ghosts were made from white paper lanterns and a free face and arms printable I found from Frog Prince Paperie . For King Boo, I added a DIY crown to show he’s the boss of the boos! Hanging these from the patio added a fun, floating effect.

4. Porcupuffer Fish – Underwater Super Mario Bros Party Decorations

We couldn’t forget about the Porcupuffer fish! These colorful creatures were crafted from purple paper lanterns, with spikes made from yellow paper cones and eyes added to make them look like they swam straight out of the game. I hung them at different heights on the patio, giving the area a fun underwater vibe.

5. DIY Happy Birthday Sign & Banner – Personalize Your Super Mario Bros Party Decorations

What’s a party without a Happy Birthday sign? I DIY’d ours using colored cardstock and printed out the Super Mario font to spell out “Happy Birthday!” It was the perfect to decorate the food area. I also made a fun banner with mushrooms and power-ups to hang above the cakes and treat table, welcoming our guests into the treat zone.

6. DIY Photo Backdrop Area – Picture-Perfect Super Mario Bros Party Decorations

For the photo backdrop, I created a balloon garland out of this kit on Amazon to match the Mario theme. I added fringe to cover the DIY backdrop stand and scattered Power-Up boxes and a Bowser flag around the area. This setup was perfect for capturing all the fun moments with the little partygoers dressed in their Mario, Luigi, and Peach SunStaches!

7. Sweet Treats & Party Favors – Tasty Super Mario Bros Party Decorations

To top it all off, I made homemade sugar cookies decorated like Super Stars and Power-Ups. They were almost too cute to eat (but not quite!). For party favors, each kid got a Mario, Luigi, or Peach Sunstaches to wear and take home as a memento of their adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom. Sunstaches are such a great party favor our guests love!

8. DIY Power-Up Boxes – Super Mario Bros Party Decorations That Pop!

No Super Mario Bros party would be complete without those iconic Power-Up boxes! I created my very own yellow Power-Up box using a simple cardboard box. First, I covered it in bright yellow paper, making sure to wrap it neatly like a present. Then, I cut out a question mark from white cardstock and glued it to each side of the box. To achieve that classic floating illusion, I used some clear fishing line to hang the Power-Up box from the patio. It looked like it was straight out of the game, just waiting for someone to jump up and hit it for a power boost!

9. DIY Cake Toppers – Sweet Super Mario Bros Party Decorations

Let’s talk cake! For the perfect finishing touch, I made custom cake toppers using cardstock and my trusty Cricut machine. I designed and cut out various Super Mario characters, like Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, as well as those iconic Power-Ups like mushrooms and stars. The crisp cuts and vibrant colors of the cardstock made these toppers stand out on the cake, adding a fun and festive flair. They were super easy to make, and the kids loved seeing their favorite characters adorning the sweet treats. These DIY cake toppers were the icing on the cake—literally!
