I grew up in a house where the superstitions ran deep! My mom is a very superstitious person. Every New Years there were a few superstitions she made sure we all took part in.

I don’t know if I would consider myself highly superstitious, but a few of these traditions have stuck with me. This year more than ever I am all for doing whatever to bring us a little extra luck. Here are a few of my favorite ones!

New Years Superstitions

1.Midnight Grapes

You better believe everyone has 12 grapes (one for each month) right after midnight. My mom would tell us to make a wish for each one. This superstition originated in Spain- the grapes are for good luck!

2.Cleaning

Every year before New Years Eve we would deep clean the house. She believes your house should start the year clean to stay that way all year. It is allowing for good luck to enter.

Right before midnight, we also sweep towards the outside of the house. This will sweep away any bad luck from the year before.

3.Bury A Coin

Before the stroke of midnight, my mom would take us all to the yard to bury a coin. She would say “With this coin, I bury my poorness.” After midnight we would then go and unbury our coins and say “With this coin I unbury my richness”. This superstition is supposed to bring financial gains.

4.Choose Your Chonies Wisely

Ah the good ol’ New Years Eve underwear dilemma! Each year we bought a new pair of underwear matching the color to whatever we hoped the new year would bring.

  • Red: Romance & Passion
  • Pink: Love
  • Yellow: Good Fortune
  • Blue: Good Health
  • White: Peace & Happiness
  • Green: Better Luck than the year before
  • Black: Bad Luck

5.Carry An Empty Suitcase

Grab your empty suitcase and stroll it around your house for a bit. My mom would say this would bring adventures in the New Year!

Whatever you believe. Whatever you wish for, I hope you have a beautiful beginning to this new year.
